What is Family Violence?

Family violence includes behaviour used to control, threaten or harm someone within a relationship, family, or other close connection.

Mainstream family violence services don't always understand LGBTIQA+ relationships and families of choice, and that gap can stop people asking for help. We do understand, and we start by listening without judgement.

Our services

We provide free support for LGBTIQA+ people and people living with HIV who are experiencing family violence. We also support people who have left a violent relationship, are planning to leave, or want help to change their own behaviour.

When you contact us, you'll speak with someone who will listen without judgement and help you understand your options.

Depending on your situation, we may connect you with:

  • Case management
  • Counselling
  • Safety planning
  • Financial assistance
  • Behaviour change programs
  • Legal, health and wellbeing services

If the right service isn't immediately available, we'll talk with you about your options and check in on your safety and support needs while you wait.

You can get support by

  • Completing our online intake form
  • Asking a health professional or support worker to refer you

Once we receive your referral, our team will contact you to discuss next steps.

To make a referral, contact fvintake@thorneharbour.org and ask for a referral form for your client.
